About Me

I’m Yuka, the creator behind Refined Japan. I grew up in Japan — moving between Nagoya, Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Kanagawa through my childhood — and thanks to parents who took me everywhere from Hokkaido to Okinawa, I developed a deep love for travel and a keen eye for Japan’s regional character early on.

I studied cultural studies in Japan, where my focus was on the intersection of Japanese and international art and culture. I later completed a postgraduate translation programme in New Zealand, which is where I’ve called home for over a decade now. Alongside translation, I work in web and graphic design — and whether I’m translating a text or laying out a page, I’m always thinking about how ideas travel between cultures.

Moving to New Zealand wasn’t always easy — I’ve written honestly about that journey here — but that experience of navigating between two very different cultures is exactly what shaped this blog.
I return to Japan every year, enough to stay connected to what’s current, while living at enough distance to notice what’s quietly remarkable about it. That outsider-insider perspective is what Refined Japan is built on.
